Came across a nice Aramid remnant so decided new ironing board covers were in order. Any tips or suggestion for working with this type of fabric? Does one need to use special threads, needles or such?
My ironing table is a vintage Protor "Flip -Down" which is no longer in production and MIB covers are hard to come by, so thought this would make a nice fast project.

Dear Candide,
The aramid will make a fine cover, but if I were making it, I'd use something (bright cotton print?) on top of it. It has an odd smell, but it should go away after being in use for a while.

Ran up my "Aramid" ironing board cover over the weekend and it works a treat.
Nothing fancy really, just cut a copy of the current cover leaving several inches for shrinkage (if any), finished the edges and attached elastic. My vintage Pfaff didn't skip a beat, though didn't bother with Nomex thread as do not intend on setting fire to my ironing board! Cutting Aramid is a bit tricky as the fabric is very stiff and the surplus yardage was cutting from was quite generous. However in the end all turned out well. Ironed several shirts Sunday night on my new ironing cover and the results were great. No scorching or burning, but yes as you stated a rather odd smell. Nothing to put one off, but an odd smell just the same.
Again thanks for replying, now to find a place to store the rest of my Aramid fibre "stash". *LOL* Cannot imagine needing to make a new cover any time soon for my ironing board, but may make some for my sleeve boards. Even then still will have quite allot left over. Pot holders anyone? *LOL*

How about using it just inside potholders? They would be heat resistant and washable.

Aramid is too stiff and "rough" for inside of anything! *LOL* In fact the edges are quite "sharp" especially when cut. Will keep the excess in my stash for future projects. Who knows may decide to take up NASCAR racing or become a fire-fighter. *LOLx2*
