Overlock with security stitch

Jul 18, 2009 3 Replies

Long time go i used to have an overlock brand Juki which could at the same time overlock and make the straight security stitch. Im trying to find one in the market with this same characteristic and i thought a 374 thread would do. Then i found out that these new ones in the market only add the fourth stitch on the overlock but not on the side for the security stitch. Can anybody recommend me which brand and model does this? Im not finding JUKI where I live and i really dont want to have to buy the overlock plus a normal sewing machine. thanks hamauta

Why not go online to the different sewing macine sites and look for one that you want. For example:

All of the above have sergers/overlockers and you will most likely find the one of your choice. I have a Pfaff 4872, which I like for this purpose, it serges and has a row of straight stitcing as well. It is called a 'cover-stitch' machine.

What you are asking for is a 5 thread overlock. It will not replace a sewing machine. The safety stitch is a chain stitch, not particularly handy for seaming. The Juki Model is MO655 I carry them.

You're looking for a 5 thread machine... Juki is one such brand (I have a MO655), but most sergers have a 5 thread machine capable of a true safety stitch. A five thread machine will do a two thread chainstitch + a three thread overlock; four thread machines can only do a mock safety stitch, as you describe.

There are two major classes of 5 thread sergers -- ones that can and ones that cannot do a coverstitch, also called coverhem. The coverhem capable machines are more expensive, generally.
