Can you tell me whether your recent sewing machine reviews are online? Looks like my 22yo Toyota is on its last legs - motor is dying and I'm going to be in the market for a new machine. I'm trying to come up with a list of features I need to help me choose a new machine. So far I have:

Some decorative stitches (less than 100, more than 20) Needle down option Feed dogs down option Walking foot / even feed Nice buttonholes Will fit a Horn cabinet for flat sewing area (I know I'll need to get a new insert)

My local (at the end of the road) SM shop sells Brother & Janome, but I'm not limited to them, though they are convenient and give good service.

The Brother Innovis 10A one is up on Bambers website, but the Bernina

1008 isn't yet. I could send you a copy of that one if you like. Has all the features you want except the proliferation of buttonholes and fancy stitches. It only has one buttonhole, but it does it superbly. It does have quite a decent selection of utility and decorative stitches, but not things like rows of ducks and flowers, and alphabets for making quilt labels. It's a mechanical machine built like a brick netty!

If you want a built in walking foot, look at the Pfaffs. If you want several styles of buttonholes and pretty stitches, look at electronic machines with electronic one-step buttonholes. I'd advise Bernina, Husqvarna, or Pfaff: I don't think Brother do anything really up to the weight and quantity of sewing you do, and I'm not keen on Janomes: they always seem over priced, over-stuffed with features, and a bit flimsy in the case and attachments and bits boxes...

If you want eyelets that work for things like corsets, you are limited to Husqvarna, Pfaff, or Bernina, all of which have eyelet plates or kits. The Bernina kit is the best, but very pricey at £95. For that you do get a whole kit wih a screw in eyelet plate rather than just a little snap in job like you get for Pfaff and Husqvarna.

Take a trip into Manchester and go to Bambers. Ask for Alan, and tell him I sent you. :) He'll tell you which ones fit the horn cabinets and which insert you need for the new machine.

Yes, please can you send me the reveiew.

Don't really need ducks and flowers - I have used those 2 or 3 times in

20 years! I was just thinking of the number of cams that I have, 27 I think, and I'd like a similar range as I do use quite a few when I am doing fabric postcards.

Fair comment. I'm not keen on the plasticky outsides myself.

I've not needed to do eyelets, but never say never!

I'll try to get over to Eccles at the weekend (they're no longer in central Manchester unfortunately), I'll also see what they've got in used machines as well.

Thanks for the advice.
