Satin, Brocade, or Metallic Jacguard Substitutes

That sounds wonderful, and a great combination of colours. The main fabric is kind of like a kid's version of those Hussein Chalayan dresses with the world air routes that lit up...

Tucks and contrast cuffs and lots of other good ideas are featured in Sew Vintage (Taunton book). I've found that book so useful, partly because it shows you how to get round shortage of yardage and combine two bits of fabric to make a garment, including using up old sweaters. I use the kids section a lot to make things for Scarlet. One of her faves is a dress with a blue bodice, red skirt, red and pink buttons and purple trim - using up remnants from the stash.
