serger thread

You'll laugh. I only change mine about October when it's time to make lots of red receiving blankets and buntings and quilts for the NewBorns in Need Christmas babies. Other than that? No. I suppose I would/could but mostly my serging is just for finishing and the color doesn't matter. Polly

I only change mine if I have to use black. The rest of the time I use the colours that the overlocker books say 'blend' in - peachy/rose, grey and ivory/cream.

I change mine all the time.... There is always a spoil sport in the group, isn't there. A couple of times I tried to use blending colors and hated the way it looked. I guess I have some O/C traits that show up when I use the serger. I also usually completely un-thread when I change colors because if I don't, something gets messed up and I end up doing it that way anyway. Juno

And then there is me! I try to match most ALL the garment colors and serger colors. Maybe not ALL the time but MOST OF THE TIME. But most of the time I have either white thread on the serger, or black. Humm, after re-reading that, it doesn't make sense, but I don't change color thread all that often. Right now there is black on the serger because I'm making doggie blankets (white fleece with black dog paw pints ) but I want to make a few using white thread. I really need to get busy on these! I'm a thread changer. I even have things like light and dark navy blue, three shades of grey (I use those for a lot of different colors), ivory and white, etc. But I use my serger a lot and I've built up the collection gradually over about 15 years.

I only have 3 or 4 of most colors, even though I usually use a 4 thread stitch I'll put the best match on the left needle and the loopers, and let the right needle take something that doesn't look too awful. Most of what I sew is clothing, so the seams are hidden, but I like it to not be too wild a combination.

One of the places I commonly buy Maxilock is Atlanta Thread -- usually runs in the neighborhood of $1.50-$1.85/cone.

Juno, you're not the only one :) I change mine all the time, too -- I've got a drawer full of serger thread cones. But then, I also use the same thread on my cover stitch machine so they do double-duty.

Yeah, I periodically get an attack of machine lust, too, but this one looks to be good for another 20+ years, so why bother? After all, I spent the first 35 years sewing on straight stitchers only...

I change my serger and coverstich thread to match each project. When I first got my serger, I used TSWLTH coupons to pick up black, white, navy and beige cones, then added other colors each time I needed them. If I cannot find serger cones in a close match, I use regular sewing thread, spinning off on to bobbins for the needles. I also have cones of black, white and red wooly nylon. I probably have a hundred cones by now.

I recently had to buy cones for one of the capes I donated, anyone need four cones of "32093 Beige Taupe"? ;-}

I do this too. I want to make sure that the threads that might possibly show at the seam match, then pick a close color but don't worry about an exact match for the other threads.

Gosh, I have MASSES of serger thread! I don't do much thread blending, though there are some fabrics that it works on better than trying to match a thread... Particularly on blended tweeds with lots of colours in. Otherwise I match, mad;y. I think this is because I need to make a really goodfinish when making garments for customers. They kind of expect a perfect thread match on any colour they come up with!

For smaller projects I tend to get 1000m cops rather than full 3000m cones. I often get both cops and cones from Empress Mills, and I fill up with their 'misshapes' any time I'm up there for colours like black, white, ivory, dark navy, and other standards.

I somehow missed this post....... I get all my serger thread (I change it out to match what I'm working on; and the sweater coats use A LOT of thread) at Atlanta Thread. I get the Mettler Maxi Lock cones for $1.85 plus shipping.

Like Juno, I "have" to change serger thread colors to match he fabric; may be a throw-back to my DM for teaching me to always use same color thread as fabric.

On the other hand, 2 cousins(sisters) who are wonderful sewists seldom change theirs and the items look great. Emily
