sewing dummies for trousers and arms

As I don't want to keep putting on and taking off sewing projects, I bought myself a dressmakers' dummy (finally), but for trousers/slacks I still have to keep trying them on and off till I get it right.

Why don't they make the torso ones with legs and arms :-(

Is there such a thing? Please say yes :)

If not, how do others manage?

Thanks Katherine

I always wear something loose and easy to take on and off, as well as slip-on shoes when I'm sewing slacks for myself. I am not at all sure one would ever be able to rely on a form for fitting slacks, and *I* am always *right there*! ;-).

Yikes! I just scrolled down to the price: US$2,227.00!!! I can do a lot of stash-buying for that kind of change.

Beverly, who'll continue using her own body, thanks ;-}

Dear Katherine,

Do you have a pattern for pants that you like? If so, you can use it as a base, and make all of your pants from the same pattern. You can even make jeans. All you need is a book that instructs you how to take that pair of pants and change it to what you want. Add pockets, pleats, cuffs, make palazzo pants, shorts, bermudas--there's no limit. Then, knowing that the basic pants fit, the changes won't alter that.

If I'm home alone and the weather is warm, I sew in my underwear. The cats don't mind, and I don't even have to take anything off to try something on.

They do, but they're horribly expensive.

You can draft yourself a darted elbow sleeve with 0 ease and then velcro it to the shoulders of the current form. Because it's such a pain to dress and undress a form with arms, that's much easier than a form that has the arms attached. Or you can get an arm pattern and make one up -- there's one in Connie Crawford's Art of Fashion Draping, or she has a pattern for sale.

There are also half-body pants forms available, or you can go the duct tape double route. Unfortunately, the half-body forms don't give you much of the information you need about pants... sitting and ease of walking, for instance.

I lust for a custom form with collapsible shoulders... but can't justify it. Ah well. Kay

Thanks everyone,

The advice and suggestions were great, and some I wouldn't have thought of.

I will just have to get a pattern or actual pants that fit and use that as a basis, and sew in my underwear :-)

Thanks again Katherine

That's why my plaid cotton-flannel nightgown is at the front of the closet.

It's also useful when I'm rumpled and dirty.
