sewing hook velcro

Does sewing the hook side of velcro to fabric cause more problems than the loop side?

My loop side sews with no problems, but the hook side seems to keep getting small birds nests and cutting the top thread.

Yes!

This is normal. Try getting the needle into that VERY NARROW bit of tape up the side of the loops... I know - tricky! But it is possible with care and practice, and it does give far better results. I also find it best to use a jeans needle and tighten the top tension a smidgeon.

Well, that will work on one side, but not the other, as the instructions had me cut a 3/4" strip into two 3/8" strips. But thanks for the confirmation. I do have a jeans needle in right now. I'll look at the tension. Thanks Kate.

Try using a small stiff card (bias tape insert works well) as a temporary moveable cover for the hooks as they move under the presser foot.

I guess you could try clipping or shaving the hooks that are along your new "seam allowance," too.

ERK! You need to buy narrower Velcro! Yes, it *is* available, in limited colours, usually found in baby things and doll garments! I'll try to find some for you. Cutting it is NOT advised, as the edge will fray. You might want to try some Fray-Check* up those cut edges.

I've seen some I think. I'll try that. Thanks.

I recently had the same trouble sewing the hook side. What solved it for me was turning the entire project upside down, with the velcro running against the stitch plate. I hand tacked the hook part to the project where I wanted it, making small tacks that I could tell where the tape was located ( stopped and started ) and used a zig-zag stitch.. Worked like a charm!

The fella who designed that tent I was talking about (waterproof bias binding tape), says he used bias nylon double fold 1/2", from owfinc.com, so I ordered some of that too.

Just pulled out my walking foot and am going to try that on some slick fabric I'm sewing on right now.

Thanks for all the help folks.

I'm writing a review of this backpack pattern I bought, for an outdoors site. Mind if I include your tip here? I won't take credit for it.

Just a heads up here...

The one and only time I ordered 1/2" hook and loop from OWFINC I was extremely pissed off to discover that it was apparently 1" hook and loop cut down the center to form two 1/2" strips, so there was a "seam allowance" on one side only. Because I'd had problems previously with snagging while trying to sew through the hooks, and because I was concerned about the possibility of fraying I wound up having to make an emergency run to JoAnn's for a package of 1/2" velcro with 2 normal edges and seam allowances.

For the record, that's the only time I've ever had an issue with anything I've bought from OWFINC.

I called them this morning and asked them to check this specific thing, before my order went out. He said it was 1/2" bonafide. Said he'd been there two years and never saw that. But I believe you and didn't want to get the same thing.

okay. I use a zigzag stitch around the edges.

NEVER try to sew the sticky stuff! IKK! Don't ask how I know, just learn...

The sticky stuff doesn't hold well enough in some uses. It's really designed to hold stuff that can't be sewn (think trade shows: plastic or metal backdrops with signs attached).

When the sticky part wears off or gets dirty or whatever it does, it can be sewn if you keep a paper towel loaded with Goo Gone handy. Two stitches, clean the needle. Repeat until done.

Someone on another list talked about heat sealing the edge of the cut velcro. Doesn't solve the thread clipping, but would solve the unraveling.

What say ye?

This was way back when I first started messing around with skid boots so it was probably fall of 2002.
