Spaghetti straps on dresses

Hi, I'm having problems with sewing spaghetti straps or any other thin straps to the fronts of dresses. Patterns always show them just being hand sewn in the front with what looks like a big loop. Every time I've tried this or improvised my own stitch, the strap ends up pinched looking or there's too much space left at the top of the body of the dress. In other words, the front top of the bodice will stick out away from the strap, exposing the hand stitching and/or pulling up on the backing.

Does anyone have a trick they do? I was thinking of sticking the strap between the front and back of the bodice the way the back is done, but I don't think there's a good way to do that if the back is already connected. If I do that with the front, I'll have the same problem in the back.

I'd appreciate any ideas. I don't even have any dresses like that that aren't hand made to see how they did it. Thanks

Sheila, do the front first, when you sew the facing on, and then leave a spot open for the back. Adjust the straps, pin, and then sew the open part. That would be much easier, and any rough spots would be in back, where it isn't as noticeable.

Hope this helps!

Thanks Karen. I think I will do that if I don't start working on some fall dresses first.
