I get VERY little spam here: most is filtered out by my ISP.
Kitty is using googlegroups, I doubt there is any ability to filter spam or block unwanted messages. "Do no evil" HAH!

You surprise me, I've always thought the signal to noise ratio on this NG is excellent.
Some of the NGs I follow have a lot of spam and a lot of trolls and nutters. I don't use k/fs, and have little difficulty in passing straight over anything that doesn't interest me - after all it's easy enough to spot.
Having said that, I've never been aware of that much spam in this NG. There are some regulars who bring out their broomsticks with which to beat the spammers..... :-)
We have a competition to see who has the fastest broomstick! ;)

I wondered if anyone would make the link, although I didn't have Harry Potter in mind...... :-)
Mine needs bump starting...
Yur right, I'm viewing the group on groups.google. I used to d/l the messages using my email reader but it takes me HOURS to set it up (trying to search ALL the groups to choose ones I'd like to read) and I can't even get a reader to work sometimes.
I guess I'm not used to seeing so much junk. it was half of each page when I logged in a couple days ago.
I'm puzzled. Do you only look very occasionally? I'm guessing you are broadband, so it shouldn't take overlong to d/l the messages.
You say email reader, is that what you mean? What were you using to look at the groups. A dedicated news reader will be far more responsive, and give you a lot more options in the way you view and deal with news groups.
I'm using Thunderbird to read the groups I subscribe to, and it's working very well. I have added some filters, and miss out on a lot of the spam that shows up in google.
'Ere wot you doin' with Granny Weatherwax's broomstick then!
I guess being a 'seamstress' in Ankh Morpork brings a whole new set of requirements too!
I'll say it does - I was a member of the Seamstresses Guild at the last Discworld convention......

actually what you need is a newsreader & an NNTP (Usenet) server. Google groups is such a PITA to use & there is no way to filter. if your ISP doesn't offer an NNTP server there are a few free servers (the Italian one is very good) & a really good one in Germany that costs around US$10-15/year (it's in Euros). some people like the newsreader built into OE, but there are free readers that have much better filtering, like xNews. i filter anything crossposted to more than 2 groups & rarely see any spam. I use a free German news-server:
Hi Kitty,
We are trying to do our best to rid THIS group from spam and archive the good messages at sewgirls.com You are more than welcome to use our interface and leave spam hunting to others :-) D~

Uh, that is an impossible task, as you have no power to stop it. You can filter out the spam so it doesn't go on your web-based ported interface, but navigating a web-based interface is still going to take lots longer than using a regular newsreader.
You know that, I know that, anyone who is savvy about usenet knows that, but I guess they're trying to promote the 'benefits' of using their web site, whatever they may be....
Ummm, let me guess. Ummm, ummm, ummmm... More advertising revenue for them, do ya think?
Too right. Spam is just a fact, as is junk mail in the mailbox. If you don't obsess over either, and just keep a "circular file" handy, it's not such a big deal. The only ones that bother me are those that use a misleading subject line. And it's a minor irritant because as soon as I see what it is, it goes straight to trash. Keep it up, and I make a filter.
