Wasn't there a thread about aprons?

Hello all,

I vaguely remember that there was a thread about aprons; I think Juno B. made some for her daughter? Anyway, I discovered that I'm in desperate need for some new aprons and since I'm a special girl, size-wise, I think I'll need a special pattern. What I want is a long apron (maybe knee-length), of course wide enough and with a bib. What I dislike about my current aprons is that those who are wide enough form a diamond shaped gap over my bust into which a lot of material drops, especially at mealtimes, and thus protection = 0. :-( Shorter shoulder straps are part of the solution, but I feel that tucks might be so, too. The question would be: where?

I've got a couple aprons from IKEA that have a tunnel on both sides; a long drawstring goes through it and forms both strings and straps. Their biggest advantage is that they fit every size. OK, they are a bit small, but their worst downside is that the protective part moves along the drawstring so that it won't stay in place. The upside is that I can pull them as high up to my chin as necessary.

Do any of you know a pattern for an apron for a big-busted, round-bellied, tall feminine being? And I don't need ruffles and frills since I like my aprons ironed but don't like household ironing too much. ;-)

U.

Yes, there was quite a thread about aprons; don't know if it was here or over at rctq. My sister asked for an apron for her birthday and I was quite out of my venue. ( Is 'venue' the word?) Anyhow, the thread was fun and someone recommended

There are several very nice aprons there. I made the scalloped one and it's a beauty. It's crossed my mind that an apron made from camouflage would hide a lot of splatters. I guess a lot depends on whether you're wearing an apron to protect your Sunday best or you're wearing it to dip the hawgs for ticks (or whatever). Polly

Ursula, If you go to >

you'll get Wild Things from wild Ginger andcan download the whole shebang free and get an apron pattern that you can size up to fit youwithout any problems. You also get a lot of other free patterns. Even one for hats (big grin). The pattern I used for my sister in law was for one that didn't need ties. I have to look it up and I'll get back to you with it. It did come in one size only and you would have to alter it to fit you. Juno

Maybe the ones I made for my DDs?

I did not use a pattern. I had a lovely utility apron given to me by my DD and used it for the basic shape and size. If you have a bib apron you like, you could probably do the same, just make whatever adaptations you want for additional coverage. (I can send you the basic measurements if you like.)

As for the "gap over [your] bust", shape the bib with angles like: / \ and set the straps in closer to the center front (they do not HAVE to be sewn at the edges of the bib), and make the neck strap adjustable by using "D" or "O" rings, and pulling the strap up to fit closer to your neck.

I used "strap slides" on younger DD's aprons, she also likes to be able to pull them up close under her chin (or not), but didn't want a floppy end hanging out.

slides were similar to these:

Ooops! Yes, that was the thread I remembered. The pattern is simple enough (the embroidery isn't, but I'm far from something that sophisticated); my problem is that my body is too round for this rather rectangular pattern which is why I had thought of darts (sorry, I got the wrong word in my first post). I was just afraid to try my hand on that myself and wondered if there might be an already existing pattern.

My best-hated apron is one with d-rings; that is no option.

Ah, that's more like it! I might try a simple rectangular pattern, add darts of my own inspiration and use those strap slides.

Thank you!

Polly Ah yes, I guess I use my aprons for all of the above purposes. ;-) I'm a little bit weak on the chest, I mean purse these days so I'd rather not spend money on another pattern and I'm resolved to use up my stash. But one of the aprons from there was the necessary encouragement for making one with darts. All the aprons there seem to be for women with a waist, I mean, one that is visible, and I'm afraid I don't belong to that category at the moment. Other than that, the site is a great inspiration. I had bookmarked it already, but I forgot; I think I learned about it in a thread about tote bags; that's why. Thank you for reminding me!

Yeah, go on, rub it in! I'll make my hat one day, and if I die in the making! Without any pattern from anybody else! I'm a big girl! ;-) Nah, I downloaded the WG stuff already last night, and I'll try another idea on that hat thing; the ones they have there aren't what I have in mind. As for the apron, I'll go for simple rectangular with darts and a strap slider (see other replies).

That one is another option. It brought to my mind that toddler's apron of Joy's. Currently, I find that my body has rather toddler like proportions and I'll be bold and try altering Joy's pattern for my purposes; a bit longer, larger arm scye, and the straps a bit more narrow. Thanks for the good idea!

You're welcome! I actually found plastic/nylon strap slides like

at TSWLTH, they are used for nylon webbing on things like camera bags, and backpacks. I customized the width of the neck strap to fit the available slides. HTH,

A couple of years ago, I made this one for my niece and Roger's eldest daughter. Both are Plus-sizes and both loved them
