Way OT-my missing son

Penny I agree with your point of view and should have said so before. I personally think cell phones are overused and over rated. A lot of people out there don't want to take responsibility for their actions. They consider cell phones the end all and be all. I think you were voicing concerns that too many people are unprepared for recreational activities. The attitude is " this is for fun, how much do I have to prepare. We saw a lot of that when my husband was running marathons. People would go out with little or no training and try to run a marathon. It doesn't work that way. I also understand your concerns about people not realizing the cost of search and rescue. I didn't think you were saying don't do it. I didn't think you were saying it wasn't justified in the case of Marlys son. I did think you were saying there are far too many done because of irresponsibity. We are human, we have brains, we should prepare for eventualities. We don't know what happened in this situation. We should all see it as a lesson in what can happen and use that lesson in our lives. It's not enough to say we are sorry. I am sorry, I hope for a good outcome, I will remember this lesson forever. Marlys is undergoing incredible stess right now. I think she has shown great courage. I think you have also shown courage in pointing out that we can never be complacent.

Trouble is, when you're talking about Mountain Rescue or Cave Rescue, it's just as likely some poor soul of a volunteer losing *their* life trying to retrieve some prat who deliberately went out there under-equipped/ in dangerous conditions/ whatever.

That's a different issue to someone caught out as Marlys' son and DIL were.

Joy, realistically, you should not believe everything which you read in the newspapers.

Volunteer? Nobody said they had to go. Public Servant? They're paid to go. Either way, I'm sticking with my original stance.

I don't like all the blaming - whose fault is it - type of conversations that always evolve from people who get into trouble like this. We're put on this earth to help each other, not judge each other.

I've sat up a night or two with a mate when her husband was called out on Cave Rescue after some tw@ts decided to while away a wet weekend by going down Gaping Ghyll.

Before our esteemed friend says "Well he's a volunteer, he doesn't have to do it"; He's a caver. If he's going down a system and something goes wrong, he needs to rely on Cave Rescue to get him out - experienced knowledgeable cavers who can save his life. If his friends go down and he's up top, they have the same need. You can't just take from a sport and never give. (Un)fortunately, they never answer a shout by first saying "Who are they? Do they know what they're doing or are they pillocks? What, pillocks? Oh well, we needn't bother with them - let them drown".

I am wondering about these myself. My daughter has doing a lot of investigative phone calling out to the area. I can't remember all that she has said, but as she said, how can someone remember one single person out of many that have gone through the area in the last week. I'm hesitant to accept that they know what they are talking about. Marlys in Indiana

do you believe any, or all, of these sightings are possibly really

Yes, Irene. They have, as far as I was told, contacted all the authorities and various facilities from Barstow both to Nevada and to Arizona.

Marlys in Indiana

- have the police contacted the hospitals in the area?

The life of the volunteer is no more valuable than that of the victim.

Are there any pictures of your son on-line? I'll be in Vegas this weekend, and although it's a stretch, a photo of what he looks like would be a lot more useful than just a description.

Maybe you can get one of the papers to publish it too.

My thoughts are with you.

Mieko, Thank you so much. I was trying to figure out some way of getting the flyer online that I have. If you e-mail me privately, I can forward the e-mail on to you that my nephew from Long Beach had sent to me. Any help greatly appreciated. God bless you for the thought. Marlys in Indiana

Sorry - I forgot to mention that in the actual papers, they did print his picture. Again, my nephew sent me scanned copies of several papers. Meant to put that in the previous message. Marlys in Indiana

So when the inexpereinced make a potentially fatal mistake it is arrogant stupidity, but when those with greater experience make a potentially fatal mistake it is a tragedy.

Is that right?

Well, let's just say that if the inexperienced and careless/whatever person dies, they might qualify for a Darwin award, but not the rescuer.d
