I can't figure out how to disengage the cutter blades to just overlock, not cut. I haven't had the machine long and the manual makes no reference how to do this. Can someone help?

The manual explains how to disengage the upper cutter on page 7:
There are a few techniques where you would want the blades disengaged (i.e. faux flatlock
After looking in the parts book and users manual I do not believe on that model you can disengage the knives--
