newbie wants to stamp velvet (?)

Hi all,

I own a few rubber stamps, but have only ever stamped on paper. Now, I have a new project that's a little different ~

I make/sell vintage style guitar straps (like the ones rock stars like Jimi Hendrix & Eric Clapton used in the 60s) & would like package each one in its own velvet - or velveteen - drawstring bag. The bag would be stamped with our business name and the web address.

The bags will be black and my first choice for ink color would be silver - second choice red or white.

I'm a little confused, because when I type "rubber stamping velvet" into Google, I get a lot of sites that tell about embossing velvet with an iron. (I definitely don't want to do that.)

My questions are:

1) What kind of ink should I use? (and where do I get it) I assume regular rubber stamping ink won't work for fabrics. 2) Is stamping on velvet a special case - anything special I need to know about that? 3) Any recommendations for getting a custom stamp made for this purpose would also be welcome.

Thanks so much for your thoughts! Looking forward to your replies.

cheers & gracias! Denise

Well--- I'd believe the sites where you read about embossing velvet using an iron. It works and looks great. You need a design that doesn't have too much detail and you have to use a special type of velvet. It's been a long time and I don't remember which kind. As for stamping in ink on velvet. I would suggest Fabrico - a special ink for fabric, but I'm not sure what kind of results you'll get on velvet. Be sure to test it out on a scrap piece first! You should find it at any good rubber stamping store. Also, the staff of the store should be able to offer suggestions about the process. As far as having a custom stamp made, most office supply stores to return address stamps, but I'm guessing that's not what you're looking for. Again, a rubber stamp store might be able to or know where you could have a more elaborate design made. Good luck!

Hi Judy,

Thanks for your reply!

I will look for Fabrico & will play with it a bit to see if it'll work for my application. Thanks.

The embossing sounds really cool, but I think the design I want to stamp, which includes our web address wouldn't transfer well. The logo is only about 2" wide.

I'm really hoping this will work - if not, I'll have to rethink how I want to get our name onto those bags!

Thanks so much!

Fine details (such as the lettering for your Web address) likely will not transfer well to any fabric, much less velvet. Fabric stamping in general works best with blocky image without much detail and plenty of negative space between the elements.

If the logo you hope to use is the one on your Web site, I suspect you're going to be disappointed. The blocky font alone might stamp OK, but the little detailing around the letters will not, nor will the cursive "by D. Raphael".

Good luck, but I think you're going to need another strategy for labeling the bags.

Hi Pat,

Thanks for your thoughts.

The logo I want to use on the bags will be much simpler than the one that's on the website. (The website is still under construction - everything's temporary there).

I may just have to forgo the web address but I would like the name AXESTRAPS on there at least, somehow. If the stamping idea doesn't work out, maybe I will look into having fabric labels made, or maybe little metal ones that I can sew on ~

Thanks so much. I am going to give it some thought.

best, Denise

Denise,

Just a thought - are you "married" to the idea of velvet? Could you use something like suede instead? or satin? Something less "plush" might stamp better, but would still be nicer than plain cotton.

Hi Barbara,

I really adore velvet and got a good deal on a bunch of vintage black velvet - so that was my thought process.

But perhaps you are right, that I should be considering other fabrics. I do want it to be something that feels good, has a luxury feel. I don't think satin would be practical as I want the bag to double as a guitar accessories bag (something they can stash in their guitar case to keep their strap or small items like picks, strings, etc.) But a suede fabric might be just the ticket. Maybe I'll head down to the fabric store & take a look around.

many thanks! cheers & gracias ~ Denise

Denise,

Thought you might like to know - I got the most recent issue of "Rubber Stamper" in the mail yesterday, and there's a whole multi-page article about stamping on leather and suede materials.

I've seen it at Barnes & Noble and our local stamp store, otherwise:
