making a lined drawstring bag?

Ok, this is such a basic, newbie kinda question, I know, but ~

I make guitar straps & want to market them in their own lined velvet drawstring bags (which could also be used to keep guitar accessories in)..

Really I would love to purchase some velvet or velveteen bags for this purpose, but can't find the right size (about 5x9).

So, I am going to make them (I even bought the fabric) & I know it should be simple. But, given the fact that I'm inexperienced in sewing and just know I'm going to mess it up if I wing it, I am hoping someone can recommend a website with some good (illustrated, hopefully) instructions on making a lined drawstring bag.

thanks for your help! :-)

cheers ~ Denise

Can't really help with instructions on how to make them, but if you're looking for a source of ready-made dyeable bags in cotton, silk, rayon or velvet, they can be found in various styles and colors at Dharma Trading Co.

I will check it out ~

still am interested in instructions, though, if anyone has any. I did buy the black velvet & some fabric to line it ~

For a simple bag, these instructions look pretty good:

I'm so glad you brought up the subject, because while looking I also found directions for this one...probably more complicated than your purpose warrants, but a really neat project that I want to try:

The only online source I found is:

it doesn't look lined, and I'm not sure you want the gathered bottom, cuff, etc.. Butterick 3485 has several versions of drawstring bags, all probably fancier then you need, but would give you the basic shape and instructions:

have a drawstring bag, again fancier than you probably want, but the basic dimensions and instructions would be included.HTH,

G'day Doreen

A friend used to make those jewellery drawstring bags and I bought several from her a few years ago for gifts. I kept one for myself and they are fabulous and I find my earrings don't fall out of the pockets while the bag is in my handbag when travelling. Have fun because they look really nice when finished.

Bronwyn,

Yes, I was thinking they would make very nice gifts...and help me use up some of my fabric stash!

Thanks Doreen! That first link looks like just the ticket!

The bags on the sceond page are really neat - I bookmarked that one, too, because it looks like it'd make a really handy bag.
