Question: Lava Paper

Hello,

I recently received a package of 'lava paper' from a friend in neutral tones. Grays, muted blues, burgundy. What have you done with them? They seem rather bulky to layer under something and are too rough to actually stamp onto. They look very interesting but I can't think of what to do with them other than cut into rectangles and make a brick wall. Any ideas?

TIA, Sandi

I find that they're beautiful as layers under others on cards and whatnot. They give them dimension, and are really very nice.

I love lava paper as a layered element on hand-made book covers, too, or even in place of bookboard as a cover for small accordian books and the like.

And you *can* stamp on it to interesting effect if you use a bold, not-too-detailed stamp. I've got a big, rough spiral stamp that looks great on highly textured paper, especially with a dusting of gold embossing powder; the image shows up on the "peaks" of the paper texture.

Thank you for opening my mind. I wasn't thinking outside the box. The lava papers are beautiful and I'm going to have to incorporate them into many more projects. I saw a variety of colors at the local stamp store recently and will now have to have them....

You know, they're beautiful with direct to paper stuff done on them, too, or embossing on them, along with the direct to paper thing. Slip some embosing ink onto it, and emboss where the ink went, and it's gorgeous!
