Looking for help for feed dog problem

Hello,

Recently I was sewing with my Singer 1022. Everythign was going along fine and suddenly the feed dogs started acting up. They move up and down fine, but when I put the fabric in and lower the foot, it appears they are not pulling the fabric through. I can also hear a wierd noise when it's trying to sew. I'm not sure how to open it up, or even what I'm looking for. I haven't sewn for awile so the machine has been sitting, but I did just finish a small project and everything seemed to be fine. I would appreciate greatly any help that may be offered!

Thank-you!

Sarah

Unscrew the stitch plate, remove the needle, and give it a good clean, oiling where the book tells you to. Take out the bobbin case if possible and clean under/round that... Also check your foot pressure - though if you are getting untoward noises, it's unlikely to be that.

Did you happen to accidently lower the feed dogs? If so you may have to raise them.

Or...you forgot to re-engage the clutch after winding a bobbin.

It's also possible there's a broken bottom gear, but hopefully that's not it. Take off the bottom cover if you can, as well as the needle plate, and have a look around.

Look in your owner's manual first and foremost in the trouble-shooting section. I would assume that one or two things have happened: a thread jam somewhere in the bobbin works (or wrongly threaded bobbin) as the feed dogs work in conjunction with the mechanics of the bobbin and needle bar (you know, the old shin bone connected to the ankle bone routine...). The other thing that I can think of is a screw loose or broken in the feed dog mechanism - but that usually causes the mechanism to drop entirely out of service. Good luck! Cynthia

Since you don't know how to open the machine, I think you may be looking for a huge wodge of fluff that's accumulated around the bobbin case and feed dogs.

Do you have a manual? If so, look at what it says about cleaning out the bobbin area. Then do it. A small stiff paintbrush is an ideal tool if you can't find the official brush that came with the machine. Give it a drop of oil if and only if the manual tells you to, and a nice new needle, and see if that solves the problem.

You should really clean out the bobbin area and change the needle after every large project. It only takes a few seconds and it avoids a lot of problems.

It could be a case of having the settings on the machine incorrect. I get a lot of machines in buttonhole mode. That model also is famous for broken feed gears, easy enough to see if you remove the bottom covers they are the

2 gears near the center of the machine.
