OT: California tourist information

Several years ago, a friend arranged a holiday in California. I remember that we drove from SF, through/past Sacramento, and ended up at a resort on a lake. It wasn't Tahoe. It was quiet and family-oriented and you could hire sailboats, sailboards and canoes.

I've lost touch with the friend and I'd like to go back to the place or somewhere similar. Does it sound familiar to anyone? I'm planning a trip with DD this summer: we've got the shopping and the spa sorted and we need a place to kick back for a week or so.

Donner Lake comes to mind. It is on the Sacramento side of Lake Tahoe on highway 50 which passes thru Sacramento. That might be what you are thinking of. Further north by a ways is lake Shasta but that is a bit of a drive and you wouldn't go thru Sacramento necessarily to get there from S.F. Clear Lake is near the wine country to the north of S.F. and kind of older and laid back with a lot of the features you mentioned. There are a lot of smaller lakes in the Sierras but they are not well known as to facilities for rentals. Possibly Folsum Lake which is smaller and in the Sacramento area. Happy hunting.

Donner Lake is on highway 80, not 50.
