I have a Chinese made scroll chuck purchased at Busybee (Canada) for $65.00 CAD. It probably the same chuck on sale on Ebay. I do not know any better. It is the first chuck I have. What I do not like about this chuck its the two lever bars use to open and close the chuck. On heavy blanks I have to check and re-tighten the chuck. I have to support heavy 12" OD wet red oak blank with the live center. The machining tolerances of this chuck is not a close one. By the time the blank is trued it is not a problem and I do not see any visual wobbling. At that price, I am planning on getting another one to minimize re-chucking. In order to remedy to this Chinese chuck lever bars and holding power. I have to purchase a stronger one equipped with a square key at a cost of $300-400.CAD Conversely, all tolerances accumulate i.e., the shaft, bearings , bearing housings and others. At the end of the year if your lathe has not been stress relieved metal distortion will still create wobbling on your shaft and transmit it to the chuck. This is more so with a welding construction. So having a close tolerance on the scroll chuck will be affected in the same way.

are the jet mini's stress relieved and normalized?

The Jet Mini's are like the SKS Chinese Riffle. Both were manufactured on low budget and minimal quality control. Both of them are producing very good results. At one time, the SKS was the weapon of choice amongst the mercenaries. The Jet Mini, for the price and providing that your use it as it was intended for, makes a good purchase.

Denis, could you please define "Iconic produced lathe" for my edification? As of yet I can find no definition for "Iconic" other then those with a religious leaning.

Not too many miles from my house I can show you a lot, surrounded by Cyclone fencing, and filled with stacks or rusting cast iron machine parts. They are not scrap. That is one way to do the stress relieving.

I have a similar process taking place on the wood in my driveway, but mostly, when the stresses are gone, the wood is cracked :-(

Previous to today

1) Icon: n :a conventional religious painting in oil on a small wooden panel; venerated in the Eastern Church

---------------------------

2)Icon: n :a visual representation of an object or scene or person produced on a surface

1) Iconic: relating to or having the characteristics on an icon

Today the word Icon, Iconic and Iconized are in use by the media to depict top ranking person, items or subject.

Example: GM is an Icon in the world of manufacturing automobiles. Gazeneuve, is also viewed as an Icon in the world of making Metal Lathes. "Iconic produced lathes" was used to depict the top wood lathes manufacturers regarded as Icons in the world without given specific names. See real dictionary.com, Ebay, CNN and others Sorry I have been watching too much CNN lately
