A suitable stand for 12" sliding compound miter saw

I think Black and Decker and others have already made a universal and folding stand called a Workmate or similar. If you put your saw on a board which can be clamped in the dogs on top or with a top and cleat which can be clamped between tables you'll have a pretty good one. Just used mine this morning to hold the router table I used for rounding over the oak pieces I cut for a project for my daughter. My benchtop tools all have capabilities to be clamped on the Workmate.

Great saver of floor space.

I've got a Wolfcraft folding stand, and it's great. Only problem with it that I can see is that the extension arms are not quite as robust as they could be when fully extended. All that means is that when you're trimming the end 8' or 10' plank on the saw, you need to either hold the piece down when cutting, or raise the rests on the end to compensate for the slight bow in the extension arm. Aside from that, it is nice and sturdy, fairly light to carry (maybe 70lbs?) compact, and easy to set up and fold down.

Porter-Cable makes a folding stand that is pretty nice looking as well, but it's $250 instead of $100 for the Wolfcraft. It's obviously a more sturdy rig, but bulkier, and probably heavier as well.

In any case, the folding stands are the way to go if you ever want to take your saw out to a jobsite. They make life a lot easier, and take up less room. If you're going to leave it in the shop all the time, a good cabinet is probably the way to go- you may as well have the extra storage space, after all.

And of course, it's not impossible to have both, if you build a cabinet for the shop that accomidates the "feet" you bolt on to most miter saws to hook them to the stand.
