Anyone own a Jet mini lathe?...info please

Since I can't get a Jet mini lathe in Canada I have to go down to Seattle to the Woodcraft store to pick one up. If anyone owns one of these, could you check if it is CSA approved? It would have a small "c" on the left side of the UL rating stamp.

Thanks, Ryan

Check out the owners manual for the jet mini. It does not appear as though it is approved by any of the National Recognized Testing Laboratories (NRTL), US or Canada. Underwriters laboratories (UL) is one of about 20 labs reconized by OSHA. NRTL is required for equipment used by businesses but not for home use. If it was NRTL approved it would have the laboratory listed on the cover. Do you need CSA approval. Henry Doolittle

Hi Ryan

Why not buy the Delta midi, it is the same lathe but for the color, and some minor physical differences, I bought one last november at HD and am pleased with the little thing. Paid $299.-- plus tax for it, pretty good price I thought, the Oneway Talon chuck cost me about the same as the lathe, makes a real good combination.

Ryan. Have you tried Doug Black at Comox on Vancouver Island, owner of Island Woodcraft 1 800 663 5597? I'm sure they have the Jet Mini and the price is as good as that in the US. The email is snipped-for-privacy@islandwoodcraft.ca

If you do end up in the Seattle area, check out the "scratch, dent and refurb" Jet dealer around the corner from Jet's HQs in Auburn. They do get the minis in every now and then.

If I didn't talk to the General rep. at HD I would never have gone down this road. He says that if I have machines that are not CSA approved and I have a fire - even if it wasn't caused by the non-CSA machines - my insurance company would/could refuse payment. Since then I've talked to everyone involved including CSA and an insurance agent and realized that everyone has a financial stake in what they told me. The General rep. wants to scare me away from Grizzly. CSA competes with UL for survival. And the insurance agent says yes I would be covered for loss if I believe the machine was safe when I bought it. Nobody is giving me a straight answer.

Contact your insurance company's underwriting department. Give them specifics. The product you wish to purchase. Model, etc . . . send them the manual & spec sheet. Here in the states, it burns, they buy it unless they can prove you INTENDED to burn your home . . . I am an insurance adjuster, work catastrophes . . . . Who is your insurer? Never use the "word" of an agent or anyone from an insurance company . . . underwriting changes daily . . . . get it in writing . . .

I don't own one . . plan on buying one as soon as my shop is finished . . . Would be more than happy to contact the factory for you if that would help.

WoodCraft (at least in Spokane) has the Jet mini with a Nova midi chuck on sale for roughly the price of the lathe alone. It says "while supplies last" so check soon if you're interested.

Thanks. I received this reply from Jet.

I show model numbers JML-1014 and JWL-1236 are CSA approved. Please let me know if I can be of further assistance. Thank you, Stephanie Leach for Aundrea Berkey WMH Tool Group Internet Customer Support

Surprising they answered so quick because they didn't answer my earlier email at all.

I have the exact lathe and Nova chuck combo you are looking at, and the label plate on the back of the headstock says it is both NRTL and CSA approved. Hope this helps...

I have a Jet Midi and Nova chuck. I've never seen one sold here locally that was not CSA/UL approved. I love my Jet!
