Banksia nut finishing

Today I had my first attempt at a Banksia nut. Turned nice and easy. I tried paste wax to finish it, and it brought up a nice shine, but !

There always has to be a but.

Some of the holes accumulated deposits of wax, obviously not ideal. A simple blast with a heat gun resolved that issue, but what I was wondering is what have those of you who have turned these used as a finish? I am thinking friction polish might be suitable. Any suggestions?

John, I've had pretty good luck with spray lacquer, such as Deft, or the good stuff from your local hardware store. Takes several coats, preferably from different angles to coat the 'holes', but it works. Good luck with the banksia pods. Tom
