big chunk of HSS

In my stash of random machine stuff I have had what I assumed was a very large tool bit. since I didn't have a machine large enough to use it I pretty much ignored it.

this week I set up for electrolytic rust removal and have been derusting random chunks of iron. I threw the bit in. it came out with the label showing that it is indeed a tool bit.

so... it's a 1" x 1" x 7" long high speed steel lathe bit with the ends ground roughly to a lathe tool angle. my machine lathe can probably use up to a 1/2" bit. I'm not even gonna think about trying to mount it on the cross slide.

it's heavy. it's big. it *might* be a very cool thing mounted in a handle and used as a big scraper or something.

any ideas?

My favorite roughing tool for faceplate work is a 1/2" tool bit in a steel handle/shaft. If you are into big work, this could be a monster roughing tool.

===================== Take it down to Lowe's or Home Depot and see if will fit snuggly inside a piece of galvanized pipe. If so, you have an inexpensive handle for a hollowing tool. Hold it in place with a couple of Allen set screws and you're ready to roll. A 7 inch piece should last a long time.
