Book on Turning

Went to the library and bookstores to day to locate a good book on basic woodturning. Have not done any since the 60's, well, once anyway. I narrowed it down to 2 titles that seem to me to cover the basics - safety, tool sharpening & use, techniques, wood grain, in-line and bowl turning, positions & tool angles etc.

- Woodturning, A Foundation Course (Rowley)

- Turning Wood (Raffan)

Of the two, the latter seemed better as it gave lots of examples, pictures and seemed more geared towards entry level people like me nd covered all the expected topics. Can anyone else think of a good entry level one that covers most all aspects of turnng? I'm itching to get the Jet mini going but understand patience.

Both books you mention are very good. I personally prefer The Lathe Book by Ernie Conover.

Hi Grandpa, I have both of the books you spoke of, and I like them a lot. I think there are videos that go along with those books available now. Don Hart

I haven't done any turning yet, but I have the Raffan book. I feel like I know the guy.

Talk about patience... I've owned one for must be at least a month now, and I can't use it yet because it's locked up at Mom's house and protected by guard dogs with instructions to sic balls. :)

Hmmm, if you could get to the lathe, you could turn some of them to serve as decoys...

They are both good but I think Woodturning, A Foundation Course (Rowley) is a good intro and we use it as a text book for our beginning tuning classes at Cerritos collage

I have Rowley's Foundation Course book and Conover's The Lathe Book: Both are quite good. Conover's approach is a bit more relaxed. Either book would serve as a good introduction to turning.

On a side note, I just finished reading Conover's book, Turning for Furniture. That was a good read as well.
