Christmas candles

I'll buy most anything at a bargain, including some candles at my favorite thrift shop. About 12 in. length and 4 in. diameter. The wax is quite hard, some red, some green. Not being a slave to turning dogma, I thought to spindle turn them and stick on a short wood base instead of the other way around as 'normal' turners do. Might make interesting novelty gifts... might not!

Have any of you turned wax and can give me some help or discouragement? What about melting the candle to a waste disc and driving some small finish nails thru the disc into the candle, fix to a small faceplate and freeze the whole contraption overnite. Probably the faceplate will shrink and won't fit the spindle nose. Do you have a better method or should I try and report the result or failure? Or should I just send out some novelty holiday cards? Well, it has been over a week and you guys have so scorned (or plonked) my advanced idea that you won't even try to help me. A life on the leading edge is a lonely one. :(

THIS IS TO REPORT A FAILURE. I tried on my own to make some pretty coves, beads and curves on those candles and I made an unholy mess. Do you call it a catch or what when a blank melts and runs downhill on itself? Rats! I've joined Charlie Brown's turning club. Good grief! :( Arch.
