I turned on a Jet 1642 in a Woodcraft bowl turning class. I found the lathe quiet and stable. But, less than great. The toolrest never quite locked down all the way. Out of balance work might be passable with enough sand in the base. Impossible to turn more than the fixed capacity.

I decided to get a Powermatic 3520a. My new lathe is wonderful. Quiet, powerful, stable, solid.

I own the Delta 1642 and I love it. I have had it for a couple of years now and, once Delta worked out the kinks with the toolrest, it performs great! The headstock can be moved to the end of the ways to allow for turnings larger than the capacity of the lathe although a separate, freestanding toolrest is required. Its a great machine. Alex
