harbor frieght pos

Just turned my first bowl and all I can say is it was an experience. I strapped a 4 or 5 pound chunk of pecan to my cheap harbor freight lathe with the plywood stand (I built it) and that sucker rattled, shook, and bounced all over the place. I only noticed a couple of problems; 1) the tail stock does not center, so the wood ends up with a larger hole than the tail stock after it turns for a little while (I checked and I can't just shim it, the tailstock screw is not parrallel to the bed) 2) the whole headstock assembly flexed (sheet metal) while the wood was out of balance (min speed is 1090 rpm or so). So needless to say, I'm in the market for a better lathe. Any suggestions for under $600 US? I know, I know I really want a $5,000 lathe, but just not right now. Thanks in advance. Rick P.S. I know this has been covered before, but I'm too lazy to look it up. :-)

Sears Craftsman Model 00921715000. You're not going to turn anything huge, But I can throw a 14 inch, 30 pound chunk of something on there, and it handles it. For $400 bucks, I think it's a good starter lathe. BTW, build your own stand, don't bother with theirs.

Southern Tool out of Miami has the Jet 1442 for about $680. That includes shipping but does not include the legs.

reason I know about Southern Tool is that I had ordered the 15" lathefrom HF and thought it was a gutless wonder. But the more I use it themore I realize it is not so bad after all, and $300 is $300. Part of yourproblem is your stand. Get as much weight on it as you can, 80# quickcretebags is a nice way to add it. Like you, my tailstock does not match, but I may just have the tailstock reworked, which will probably set me back about $45, unless I do it myself.

Anyway take a look at the URL above, tis the best price I have seen on the Jet.

free shipping, a two year maker's warrentee. They make two lathes withspeeds asslow as 360 and 380 RPM. Also I believe they are made in the USA and areprescision and accurate. Both of their models have a headstock that swings to "off bed", inboard and outboard, for larger bowls and vases. Actually, click this:

There, that lathe is made by Palmgren for Sears, it's how to get the bigger one for $79 LESS than Amazon, no shipping cost if you go to Sears to order it into the store. Good call on that.

Rick if you would have looked or asked before, you wouldn't have this POS in your shop or wasted your money, save your money now and work with what you have until you can buy a good lathe, not another POS

Hi Rick,

After aligning the tail stock, I built a box out of 3/4 ply and attached it to the inside of the lathe stand from HF. I filled it with 450lb of sand and now it works very well without vibration.

=========================== Bill, The one you have is the Jet 1236 clone, but the one he has is the REAL "el cheapo" sheet metal and tube bed machine. It should be used mainly for spindle work because of all the flex as well as the 1100 RPM minimum speed. With care, and a lot of patience, you can get some production from these machines (I think Maxprop started with one of these). I don't think weight will solve the problems with this lathe. :-)

look for a used lathe, for your budget you can get a pretty good used wood lathe

Thanks all, the pos that i have is the cheapest lathe that harbor freight has (sheet metal). I'll save my pennies for something better. I guess its like they say, it only hurts once to buy quality.
