Jet 1442VS

I have a Jet 1442 with the Reeves drive and it looks like the speed adjust spindle has slipped a cog. The sleeve on the spendle that actualy has the splines on it has either worn or stripped whatever held it and is now rotating rather than moving the pulley half. Is there a cure or is it a new spindle?

Thanks

From the manual's parts breakdown it appears all of the reeves drive pulley assembly are held onto the spindle shaft by set screws. I'd check for a loose/missing set screw.

Nova, I am talking about the speed control handle (item #13) which is the thingy that pushes and pulls all the rest of the drive. I do wish there was a set screw in it - tht it was that simple.

Thanks

Not sure if it's the same problem, but several times over the years, the allen screw holding the speed adjusting lever has backed off and let the speed control, which has a gear on the end and engages the worm screw on the top pulley, slip in and out.. You can tell if there is too much play by gently pulling on the center of the handle with the lathe running... It might move in and out of just wiggle a bit and cause the speed to creep.. A few times, mine got loose enough to skip a tooth or 2 and make my speed indicator wrong..

Sort of a bitch, but I use a long screwdriver to reach inside the headstock housing (through the rear of the case with the cover removed) and push the speed control back in.. out? wrong word, but if you push it flush with the housing, you'll feel the speed control handle slide away from the (outside) housing and have more clearance between the handle and the outside of the case.. That's when you keep the screwdriver pressed against the end, push the speed handle as far onto the shaft as it will go, and tighten the allen bolt.. It should fit into a slight groove on the shaft.. Not sure if it's supposed to be there, or was worn in over the years by the allen bolt slipping..

Funny, but I've just been dealing with the same thing, must be something in the air.

I found that the set screw had been put on slightly out of true with the flattened part of its shaft.

When I tightened the set screw down, it slipped a bit, and wore on the shoulder of the shaft. I had to be pretty particular about how I re- installed it.

I did the same as Mac did, but I slipped the belt off the sheaves and was able to get my hand in there to push the shaft back towards the control handle. Yes, I did very much have the motor unplugged. If it started, it would have been a disaster!

So far, it's working the way its supposed to.

Mac and "Old Guy" you are both right on, that was the problem. What threw me was the way the unit goes together. I called Jet and talked to Robert in Tech Support (wonderful experience) and he gave me the same advice you both did.

Thanks
