Does anyone know if the small Legacy Ornamental Mill would do an efficient (speed & quality) job on items such as gavel heads and handles and pens. I just bought (and am returning) a Vega Duplicator because it couldn't properly handle the small but relatively deep coves and high beads.
In the end I think you will find that the fastest and best way to do what you are wanting to do is to turn them by hand.
In production, they can use a knife with the entire profile ground into it but we are talking many dollars and I doubt that the quantities you could sell would justify the cost. Even here, you cannot get the clean cuts that a good turner can get and you cannot do anything requiring undercuts.
Another approach is to use something like the Vega duplicator to get the profile close, then finish by hand. Even there, though, a good hand turner will beat you to the goal line, I suspect.

Robert, I have a Legacy for sale; For sale; Legacy Ornamental Milling System. Purchased new in Oct 2003. Model 1000 EX 60", floor stand, .25 reduction gear system, design kit, Porter Cable 5 speed plunge router, RC Eliminator for quick bit changes. I probably have less than 20 hours use. Several video tapes showing projects and setup. It's just like brand new. I want to switch to a bench-top 4 axis CNC mill for my pens, I don't need the 60" capacity of this machine. Todays machine is a 72" model, but equipped the same way will cost $3060. I want $2000 for mine. If you want me to ship it, I'll crate and deliver to the trucking company for free. You only pay the actual shipping. I prefer PayPal payment. If you don't want the router and collet eliminator, subtract $200. Buy the complete package and I will throw in 500 pen blanks!!!!!!!!!!!! With a Legacy, there are options that you can do on a pen, or other spindles, that cannot be duplicated by hand. Spirals, hollow spirals, rope molding, etc......The only down side I have found with the Legacy is sanding after the turning. With the RC Eliminator I have in the sale, it is very easy to change bits and profiles. I put an o-ring on the shank of the bit so I can set it back to the same depth after removing. I've had this for sale for a little while and I sure would like to get the 4 axis mill. If you are interested, I can include more pen blanks, or throw in a couple of router bits to spice up the deal.
