I got my start as a woodturner making lamps for a custom lampshade artist. They are easy and fun to make, give you a chance to hone your spindle skills, and the design possibilities are endless. A lamp auger is handy for drilling the hole if you are using solid wood, and the only wiring you need to know is how to tie the Underwriter's knot. I used to browse through stores ranging from Target and Kmart to lamp specialty shops for inspiration. I can't imagine being a woodturner and not having at least a couple turned lamps in the house (as well as a kitchen cabinet stocked with turned plates and bowls). They should be an essential on every turner's project list.
