1950's lamps

I am looking for a source (wholesale preferred) for raw fiberglass sheets. Such as those used to make lamp shades in the 1950's. I want to make some custom shades for some lamps I am going to make.

Thanks, Kris

========================== You should be able to find it at most places that sell auto body repair supplies. Paints, lacquers, bondo, etc. I've even seen some small fiberglass sheets at Walmart in their Auto supply section.

Why not try to turn the shades on your lathe? There is a turner here in the US that makes lampshades and does pretty well in selling them.

Try doing a Google search - I am sure you will be able to find him. His shades are turned from lighter woods and are really thin walled - probably to about 1/16th.

I think if you turned your your lamp shade, that would be a custom made shade!

Do you want sheets as in similar to florescent light panels, or sheets as in fiberglass cloth? If panels, you can get them at any Home Despot. If cloth, you should be able to get it at auto parts shops or at marine suppliers - the cloth is used in boatbuilding and auto body repair.

However, if you want the Arts & Crafts look - as seen here:

what you really want is Mica, not fiberglass. You can find Mica sheets here (and other suppliers):

I don't think Chris is looking for fiberglass cloth or the plastic sheets at home depot. I remember some lampshades my grandparents had and they were made of a translucent fiberglass material. It was also used on lamp shades on fifties travel trailers. I am restoring a 1957 Shasta for a lady right now that has a light fixture near the bed that has a fiberglass shade.

Good luck finding it>

You looking for plain dry fiberglass cloth? If so what thickness?

I sell fiberglass cloth BUT the smallest quantity is 20 yds.

I am looking for the finished raw material that can be hand sewn to the metal hoops to create the shade not the cloth.
