Ott Light Question

I've never really looked at the Ott lights, but Hobby Lobby has them on sale, so I was thinking of going to take a peek. Any advice? Looking at some web sites, it seems there's floor and desk lamps. I think the only one I've ever seen is that "task lamp".

When I string beads or wire wrap, I sit at my desk to work, so I'm not sure what I'd want, but probably something adjustable.

Jerri, I've had an Ott light for several years and it's fantastic. I have the floor model and have the magnifying attachment, too. I used it for cross stitching but now it's used for beading. It simulates daylight which gives you a truer color. Makes it much easier to sort seed beads that are in the same color family. If you purchase one, you'll wonder how you went this long without it. :)

I have the floor model with the magnifier, too. I've seen the folding task lamp, the floor lamp, and now a clamp-on desk lamp with the adjustable neck like the one on the floor lamp as well as a "Flex-Arm" style. I imagine that the magnifier (which is sold seperately) would fit on the flex-arm lamp.

Their paper catalog has all the different Ott models, as well as replacement bulbs, and they're pretty good about offering everything in their catalog online. Arondelle

You can just buy the daylight bulbs, so you could buy a normal cheapie desk lamp with movable arm and just fit a daylight bulb in it! It would cost you less than a £10 over here!

If you do consider an Ott light, check to see if your local JoAnn's crafts has them. I got mine there with a 50% off coupon. $35 is much, much better than $70.

I have an Ott light, the task light model which I bought when they first came out. I adore it!! Once you use one, you will get addicted. I bought mine at a quiliting store, it was much cheaper there. I haven't had to replace the bulb in the 4-5 years I've had it. I've noticed that places like Michael's and Staples have knock-off halogen type lights they call "craft lights", don't know how good they are, but they are very cheap. Patti

Before you spend a bundle on an Ott light, try the "GE Reveal" bulbs. Four for about $5 where ever they sell light bulbs. It is less glaring than the ott light, and sure costs less. You can put them in any light fixture that takes a standard bulb. You can probably get and attachable or free standing magnifier for a lot less than the one from ott as well. Kerry uses one in a floor lamp over her work chair, she works on a tray in her lap. She prefers it to the Ott.

What you could do is to save it as a .pdf and then email that.

I have the clamp-on version for my work table and a task light with magnifier that I can position for extra light or take with me to classes.

That is the one I have and I like it especially because it's portable.

I too, prefer the GE Reveal bulbs over the Ott light. I used to love the Ott lights, until the lovely Moretti Lavender came out. Under the Ott light or flourescent lights, it looks like a pale blue, but the gorgeous lavender really comes out in daylight or the GE Reveal lights. Also, under the Ott light and flourescent lights, some of the reds tend to look brown.

At Office Depot, I have bought very nice clamp-on lights with magnifiers. The ones that hold the bulbs as opposed to the round tubes are the cheaper ones, which is great, since that's what you would want anyway! I believe they are only about $20.00 or less.

And if you have a specialty lighting or light bulb store in town, they will probably carry the commercial version of those bulbs for about a buck-fifty apiece... same performance, but much, much, much longer lasting.

That lavender shows blue under direct sunlight, fluorescent and Ott for me, And violet/lavender under tungsten and indirect sunlight for me.

Thanks for all the advice on the lights. I didn't know the Otts were so expensive. Maybe I will try the Reveal bulbs first! Do the Ott lights not put out the heat like regular bulbs do? The desk lamp I have is adjustable, and I get pretty hot under it, but I like to have it pretty close when I'm working.
