Sick Machine and Ott Lites

First, do you have an OTT Lite and do you like it? I have a 50% coupon and would like a better light near my machine in my little corner of the computer room. If I was to get one I would get a table top version. Just wondering.

Now to my irritated rant. Of course, I am the one that sews on my machine frequently but I don't know anything about it according to the repair store. My Viking Designer I quit in the middle of a design this weekend. I had wondered about it, since just before I bought it from my Mom, the power supply was recalled for a potential safety problem, catching on fire, although only two out of the thousands in existance had been so affected. Then the transformer was recalled, this instance the transformer is just quitting, after I had bought it from my Mom, and the store where she has shopped for 30 some years let her know so she could let me know. So this last summer I took the machine in to get it checked if it was in the serial number range. "Oh no, there has only been one recall. You've wasted your time bringing in your machine." I explained what I knew, showed my documentation, and they would not take my machine to check it out. Now to this weekend. And it stops, and wastes my thread and fabric and time, and when I take it in and finally am able to talk to the sales clerk that I like, AND knows what is going on and what she is talking about, said that yes, there was a second recall, and it sounds exactly like what my machine was doing, and smelling like (not good). So, it is at the doctor's and will be at least another week, longer if they don't have the recalled part in stock. GRRRRRR! I forgot her name, but you can bet that she will be the only person that I talk to from now on when I go to the only dealer in town.

If I'm wrong, I'm wrong, but please don't just dismiss me out of hand when I have supporting heresay, evidence and documentation. At least I have my Lily to keep me going. So much for trying to get some Birthday presents done ahead of time.

Just venting. Thanks

Lots of the older quilter friends I have use Ott lites and really appreciate them a lot. Sorry about the problem with the machine and more so the problem with the shop. I do hope you are on the right track to getting the machine right and you can move on. HOpe the rant helped. As far as getting bd presents done ahead of time, my bd isn't until Dec. if that helps. ; )

Nice beg, Taria. Subtle, dignified and perfectly clear. That was good. As to the Ott light, I've had one for years and love it. It is terrific for seeing what I'm sewing (a good thing) and grand when I'm wondering what colors really look like together. Mine is a floor lamp; I really don't want anything on my SM table that would be getting in the way of quilts coming through. I can't think 'why' but I like to have my Ott on the left and wouldn't want it perched on the left side of the SM table. If there's not a heap of $s difference, get the floor model. Polly

I love my floor lamp Ott lite. I agree with Polly that I don't want anything else on my sewing machine table.

I actually have both a floor and a table top Ott light; the floor model sits to the left of my sewing machine and the table model sits next to my serger. I like the table model because I can move it in close for things like threading the loopers on the serger - or to arragne for better visibility of one area. It doesn't get in the way because when it does, I just move it :)

Well, Sherry, of course we do need room (but over on the right) for cold beer, boiled peanuts, Margaritas, chocolate, Prozac, Band-Aids, 2 fat cats, the tv remote and maybe some scissors. Polly

What a bummer. :( I hope they get it sorted out so you can get back to your sewing.

Research research research! If you can afford to blow the bucks with your 50% off coupn go for it. Me, I blew $25 on an Ott bulb and put it in a standard 13W halogen lamp. Works fine. I use it for painting, though I find it a bit cold. If you poke about a bit online you will find a spectrum comparison table for assorted color corrected bulbs, that I did not save the url for. There are actually several such tables as I recall, just bypass the ones put out by companies that make the things. Anyhow, you will see that Ott is really no better than average, and atually more expensive than some that give better light.

Twas of all things a troll crossposting between two groups in an attempt to make them go at each other that got me to look so closely at lights. Yeah, when alt.gothic met sci.physics, we talked about Ott lights. Here is the info I got from it if you want to look:

I had to make that tiny it was so huge!

That is the way to do when you have limited options.

A-Ha! You get down here right now and take your weather back! This was the second snow day in a row here. I am about ready to ring up Fish and Game and see if they are issuing permits for sky bears.

I have a table-top OTT Lite, Steven, and I just love it - don't know how I managed before! Mine is the large one, with a long light part and powerful 'bulb'! It has two flexible pieces inset into the 'stem'. (You will understand from this that I do not remember the model name >gFirst, do you have an OTT Lite and do you like it? I have a 50% coupon and

My table-top one has a heavy base and I don't have it clamped to the table edge. It sits on my desk/table which is adjacent to my SM table, so I just turn it one way for SM, and round back for the desk. .

I have one Ott lite and 3 No Brand Chinese knock offs that I got from Joanne's. I honestly can not tell the difference between them and therefore, would suggest you check out the knock offs as they are about half the price of the Ott. Your experience may vary.

Sort of. . . . In Wal-Mart I bought a lamp that takes the 13-watt bulbs. Then I went to Office Depot and bought an Ott-Lite replacement bulb for $11. Yes, it was a genuine Ott-Lite replacement bulb.

I will have to agree with Polly and the others. If you can manage the $$ AND if there is a suitable spot for the floor OTT Light, that's what I would get. I have a floor model OTT Light with the magnifier attachment and absolutely LOVE it. I don't use my OTT light at the sewing machine, I use it for doing needlework and it is a great light. At the sewing machine, I have a standard office light that screw clamps to the edge of the sewing table so I put it to my right and at the back of the table. It's the kind with the two adjustable arms that have springs on them and the light receptacle is sort of funnel shaped. It is high enough off the table that it doesn't get in the way of my quilts, etc. but still gives me extra light to see by. CiaoMeow >^;;^<

I have two OTT lights, a floor model in the family room, for use when I'm doing embroidery, and a 'task light' which lives by the SM. It's very useful when I'm choosing thread colours, or fabric combinations. Originally, I bought the task light for travel, since motel rooms are much too dark to do handwork (while DH flips TV channels). I like them both. Lee

I pass on the boiled peanuts; just roasted ones for me, and I don't have pets, but everything else (especially beer & margaritas) sound great!

I have 2. The one downstairs is a floor model that I love to use when I am doing handwork in front of the TV. The piano teacher likes to move it to the living room since he likes the light when he is teaching my son. The other one sits on the sewing table-- has a magnifying glass, goose neck, and a place for me to put pins and needles. Unfortunately, as of yesterday, my quilting is going to be far and in between until I can finally sell my house and move. I have the house painted, and new carpeting. Now I am scrubbin and hope to have it on the market in the middle of next week. I lose my child support in June and will have to give up the house then. Not a great time to have a house on the market.

I just looked at JoAnn.com, with the sale they have on currently, the bigger desk lamps, that have a heavy base and enough height to angle anywhere you want are very similar priced to the floor mounted ones.

I have a table top (portable) model and I love it. When I need the light, I can move it from my sewing table to my cutting table (works great for cutting green fabric on a green mat ), and also to my LR chair when I'm doing hand work.

Yes, mine was almost exactly the same price as the floor one; but I preferred the desk one, as I didn't see a floor one with the long tube light, and that is what I wanted. Sad to say, of course, there were no coupons to shelter me from the full price! . In message , Anne Rogers writes
