Laundering Minkee

In my long drawn out search for the best priced Minkee I could find, I saw some care instructions- some where!- that said to not use fabric softener with Minkee. Also, to air dry Minkee to prevent static electricity build up. Did anybody else see the warning about fabric softener? Does anybody have *personal experience* with using fabric softener on the Minkee and what happened? Did it self-destruct or lose it's softness or ruin the nap or what???

Hi Leslie, The only thing that I know is that fabric softener coats the fibers trapping more air into the minkee/polar fleece therein making it more apt to burn if exposed to flame of any kind. Well that is what we were told when selling the stuff when I was working at the fabric store. Other then that fact it doesn't ruin the nap, nor does adding fabric softener make it self destruct in 30 seconds after removing from the dryer. What you could do is if you don't want to air dry it is put it in the dryer and in the last ten minutes or so, add a fabric softener sheet. A fabric softener sheet in for that long wont do all that much, just make it smell pretty in the long run of things.

I had to wash a receiving blanket made with Minkee and lined with super-satin. Using chalk, I'd written the baby's name on the satin so I could embroider it. The chalk would Not brush or rub off. (For that matter, it didn't wash off either. @#$!) Anyhow, I just plain old washed it and dried it in the dryer. No fabric softener. None of that sissy stuff about blocking it and letting it air dry. We know daddies helping with the laundry aren't going to do that. Polly

Ah, Polly, that was exactly my reason for asking. *My* daddy will most likely be doing the laundry when mom is feeling the effects of her treatments. Thanks Dawn and Polly! I won't even mention it to avoid any extra stuff for them to have to try to remember.

I don't know about Minkee but I toss every charity quilt (and baby quilt) I do in the washer and dryer. After it comes out of the dryer it goes straight into a new clear plastic bag and sealed up. With really hairy dogs and 2 cats I just don't want anyone to have allergy problems. I also can tell if the fabric or quilt as a whole have any problems.

If you use fabric softener sheets, you should also wash the filter in your dryer once in a while, because the fabric softener tends to build up on it and block the air flow.

You know those blue spiky looking balls you see for sale in catalogues that are for use in the dryer? Well, THEY WORK! I bought some when they were on sale in one of my catalogues and now I use them all the time. They work great at drying clothes faster AND keeping down the static so that you don't have to use dryer sheets or other chemicals. They aren't that expensive and if you're the type who doesn't like to use dryer sheets, they would be a god send. Sometimes I still throw in a dryer sheet because I like the smell that is left on the towels & sheets but it's certainly not necessary. CiaoMeow >^;;^<

I got mine off a jpeg at the drugstore (Rite-Aid). They have them at Wal-Mart sometimes now. I still treasure the look on the face of the young man doing stocking at 3:00 in the morning when I asked him if he knew if they had dryer balls. I hadn't quite thought of it like that. The spikey blue ones do work better than tennis balls. Tennis balls tend to get fuzzy.

Tennis balls get fuzzy because of that nap on the surface. Balls used for Racquetball are plain rubber type. Those work well. PAT

And that, my dear, is exactly why I'm asking here, rather than googling this. LOL!

Racquetball balls are also excellent pet toys, Pat. The pets can't tear off the fuzzy outer "skin", since there isn't one, and these balls are nearly indestructible -- and they bounce so well! LOL!

Ah Pami, that is such good news. I've only stitched Minkee, didn't really know how it would do other than experimental 'first' laundry. So glad they are sending our love to you. Polly

I've got a store-bought 'minkee' robe .... I do not know if it is real Minkee, or a copy cat fiber. It is the dotted type. It launders nicely, in washer and dryer. It is soooo cozy! PAT in VA/USA
