Drove up from Fresno to Davis, CA to met the famous Robohippy... an interesting experience!
I always enjoy meeting folks that I "know" from the web, and Reed was ne exception... The fact that he makes a living from turning and furniture building gives him my respect and besides being a pleasant social experience, I learned quite a bit from him regarding marketing, promotion, inventory, etc...
I think the thing that struck me most is that most of his work is utilitarian... and sells well..
The only turner I'd met before was a very "high end' kind of guy who did fantastic work with thin walls and stuff and excellent finishes... and wasn't selling anything at the fair we met him at..
NOTE: We met Reed at a "whole earth festival" and the crowd wasn't what I'd consider average buyers.. mostly a young, vegetarian, tree hugging group, and thought I saw Reed sell a few "art" pieces, most of the folks seemed to be buying small bowls in the $16 - $20 range and planned to EAT out of them, not look at them.. *g* (The good part about that is most folks bought more than one)
