Met Robohippy this weekend

Drove up from Fresno to Davis, CA to met the famous Robohippy... an interesting experience!

I always enjoy meeting folks that I "know" from the web, and Reed was ne exception... The fact that he makes a living from turning and furniture building gives him my respect and besides being a pleasant social experience, I learned quite a bit from him regarding marketing, promotion, inventory, etc...

I think the thing that struck me most is that most of his work is utilitarian... and sells well..

The only turner I'd met before was a very "high end' kind of guy who did fantastic work with thin walls and stuff and excellent finishes... and wasn't selling anything at the fair we met him at..

NOTE: We met Reed at a "whole earth festival" and the crowd wasn't what I'd consider average buyers.. mostly a young, vegetarian, tree hugging group, and thought I saw Reed sell a few "art" pieces, most of the folks seemed to be buying small bowls in the $16 - $20 range and planned to EAT out of them, not look at them.. *g* (The good part about that is most folks bought more than one)

I also met Reed, last February when the wife and I were on our way south to Palm Springs. He had invited me to stop for a visit when we passed through Eugene and spend a little time with him in his shop. I'd askes some questions on this group about how to use the McNaughton centre saver and he was kind enough to put on a demo for me. A good guy and very knowledgeable. I wish we lived a little closer 'caus I can use all the dual on the lathe I can get!

We were supposed to meet him a year or so ago, on a trip to WA, but his daughter had a cold and we decided that he would be busy with that... I still want to see his shop..

I'm looking forward to his upcoming DVD on coring.. I need a LOT of help on that... or to start a business making funnels and wood bowl fountains.. *g*

Reed did confirm my suspicions that I need the mini knives for the size of blanks I'm trying to core.. I bought the size that folks recommended for my lathe, not thinking that they might be too big for what I work with.. Mac

You guys are making me blush!!! or is that some of the Oregon rust (sun burn) from a hot weekend by Sacramento. It was a great show. A very interesting crowd of students, community, and staff/professors. Sold a lot of everything, including a $1,000 table. Now, what new tool is out there that I don't already have, and just can't live without.

On another note, any one live by Corning, CA? Saw as olive orchard where all of the trees were pushed over on the west side of I -5 just north of Corning. Me with no space in the van, and no chainsaw. #$%&!!!!!!! robo hippy

It would have been worth the trip to meet and learn from some of the regulars around here as I am fairly new to turning.

Maybe I can make the drive some weekend eh Robbohippy?

Take care,
