Motor mount plate

I have a Grizzly G1245, the heavy duty wood lathe. It was given to me so I don't want to go out and buy a good lathe so am trying to fix all the problems with this one. I've fixed most things but one: the motor mounting plate is junk. This lathe has the variable speed control with the expanding and contracting pulleys. When you change speeds you can actually watch the plate flex and give, actually tilting the motor at some speeds. When the motor tilts it complains, sending out some awful noises. Also the plate bolts directly to the frame so while it doesn't produce much vibration at the head, it does make the sheet metal base vibrate and produce strange and annoying noises. A heavier metal plate would fix the flexing but not the vibration. I'm thinking of making a plate out of 1" plywood, laying rubber motor mounts on top of that, and the motor on top of those. No way would a 6" x 6" piece of plywood flex (I think). It also seems it would really cut down on the vibration. How about it? What do you think? Any suggestions for another material for the plate?

I'd go with a heavier metal plate. Also, rubber motor mounts are going to flex, too. While you won't have the noise, you will have motor movement which will interfere with belt tension.

I would want to use a thick piece of wood for the motor plate, 1.5 to 2 inches whether plywood or solid. There are also vibration isolation pads that can be bought from an industrial rubber supply house or perhaps Grainger that reduce vibration noise when placed under the motor. If you raise the motor with the new plate or isolation pad, you will loosen the belt so be aware of that before going ahead. Joe keeler

Thanks for the responses, both on the list and privately. When I get home from vacation I think I will begin by using all the ideas! I will bolt a heavy piece of lumber underneath and onto the existing plate. That I way I will get the added strength and vibration dampening. still have the rigidity of the exisitng plate and not have to re-drill and fit and new set-up. I will also tighten the motor much more. Because of the rubber, I had left the motor sort of loose but tightening it down tight makes sense.

I'll get the ol' Grizzly in shape, yet!
