Musing about rcw, using too many I's, My's & Me's and one lonely You.

I am a COC intermediate hobby turner without a recognizable signature style. I'm not welded to any specific cutting, preserving, or safety techniques or high flown turning philosophy. I haven't discovered Woodturning's Holy Grail, much less turned it, and I never will. Contact with my tools, chucks and lathes hasn't yet infected me with the dreaded EBLS virus, the excessive brand loyalty syndrome. This isn't meant as a soupy "mea culpa", but I hope those who are angered or nauseated with my style recognize my errors are of ignorance and omission, not of intention and commission. I have offered little and learned much (unfortunately forgotten most). I've made many net-friends, suffered a few misunderstandings and too often I presumed to act as an un-asked for mediator or referee. I've been around RCW long enough to have outlasted too many good people as other forums burgeon. Some I really miss, some not so much and some not at all. On balance, I've had, and am having, a fine old time belonging to this warty ng.

Each of us is unique re our approach to the craft, but I suspect that I typify 99% of YOU who now or did post to RCW. Agree? Arch

I agree. I enjoy this NG very much. It is educational and entertaining. Wood turning is such a joy for me, and it is a joy to find a forum such as this to support it.

Did you try the square turnings, Arch? Tough to tell if my ISP is passing posts, though of late they've been showing in Google.

George, Not yet, but I plan to. A good suggestion that I hadn't thought of. To all of you, thanks and my apology for not acknowledging your helpful suggestions. Arch

Hi Dan,

The only acronym that you need to know to understand Arch is COC (Crotchety Old Coot). Arch has attained the lofty status of 'THE' COC of this newsgroup. Part of that is because he covets the title and promotes himself as such. Some of it is that he simply outlasted the others. But mainly it is a badge of honor. It stems from that good natured frivolity that allows you to call the largest guy in your group "Tiny". Arch can always be counted on to put a little spice in the NG. When you really need a serious answer, he can explain the solution in a way that you can understand. But mainly, when things get a little draggy, Arch can come up with the darndest posers. After you have hung around here for a while, you will recognize names in the "From" column that you will always want to open first. If Arch isn't at the head of that class, it sure doesn't take long to call roll. (OK, I admit that I stole that last line from Bum Phillips.)

COC means Chain of Command. At least in the Navy it did.

Yeah, but here it means Crotchety ol' Coot. You'll have to google for the history...

If you substitute "CMAC beginner" for "COC intermediate", I'm in.

Hmmm. First you have to show some requisite element of "crustiness". Can't be awarding COCs to just anybody these days you know!

Whatcha think Arch, Dave been crotchity enough to warant a CMAC or is he an all around nice guy? We might do one on a trial basis.

Your Mightyness, Sir:

A truly bitter & grouchy PITA problem: As a true believer and COC, 1st, I've got mine and I don't want anybody else to get in. OTOH, Dave does seem to be a fairly miserable sort and he might fit. He has helped others here, and people seem to like him. Not very goodt credentials for an aspiring novice COC. We've got to be careful. that he is PLU. I don't know if he snorts LDD or if his neighbors complain about the lathe in his yard loud enough? I suggest that your sorry question had best be run by Lyn for his opinion and a careful review of COC's history for the masses.

Always with grudging respect, Blah, blah, Arch, head acronymist, Southern Corps

Well it seems you have kicked it up another notch! Not only are you the COC of this board, you are also the Sage, Seer and Sanctimonious Spinner of Wives Tales, Myths and Legends!

I on the other hand tend to use too many I's in my too infrequent posts - I want everyone to pay attention to me! But, alas it is those who magnify others who are themselves magnified!

Thank you, you COC, for being here to shine your spotlight!

Hi Arch, I don't like this group anymore. They all don't agree that my methods are the correct way. They all want to be individuals not sheep. Who needs 'em. I now spend my time at the forum on

. I must say that it is THE BEST woodturning forum on the planet (and maybe better than those on most other planets). Most of those who you miss most are at that site. Of course woodturning isn't the only thing we discuss there. Some other notable topics on the site include: flossing for success, thong wearing for the literate, clean shoes - clean spleen and problems with the Windows operating system. The last has now reached

4,569,481,365,227,060 messages and is growing by the second. I will send you an invitation but first you need to write down "Tony Manella is always right" 6,666 times on sheets of paper and snail mail them to me. Then, if I still feel inclined, I will send you an invitation to join the thousands of others already there. Now if I could only get my wife to join. ;-)

Arch,

I too miss some of those that graced this forum, but no longer do.

I offer my opinions on this forum if someone asks and I try to keep my advice to what I actually know. I learned that from a friend who, in response to my pronouncements, would frequently asked me "Is that a fact or an opinion?" I learned to limit comments to what I know and state opinions as such.

I also try to point others to helpful information if I know where an alternate source might be.

As for opinions...........

I like my Stubby lathe; my Vicmarc chucks; and I prefer a Sorby bowl gouge over a Glaser, except that I like the Glaser handles better. I like Daly's Ben Matte Tung Oil and I don't like Waterlox. I hate to turn Walnut and mahogany, but love hard maple. Here in Southern California, I treat eucalyptus wood as turning stock - not firewood.. I like to color, dye and carve my work. I am strongly opinionated as to the need for proper lung protection. And I have a bucket of LDD behind the shed to try, but no results yet.

Leif,

I already have five or six items soaking, but haven't had the time to start turning them.
