My gouges are sharp now what?

What's the best tool for making simple dowels from square stock. I am trying to make some bar stools.

A roughing gouge followed by a skew. pick up any of the basic turning books and read them, it'll be worth the effort. Dave in Fairfax

The BEST tool is a doweling tool, of course. Unfortunately, I don't have a picture of one. Think of a large pencil sharpener type of device with a hole in a piece of wood with a blade attached to it set at an angle.

If you're wanting to use just the basic toolset, use a skew and your hand to suppport the stock if it whips.
