Is this a genuine antique? If so, refinishing it could be a bad idea, given that collectors almost always want the original finish.
If it's an heirloom, you could try a tung oil finish, or a wiping varnish.
If the carving is quite intricate, you should spray a finish on, as any oil finish neds to be applies, and then ALL the excess removed. if you spray on shellac, it will build fast, look nice, and it's reversible (can be removed with alcohol).
