NEVER Scrape!

George Somtimes it is just the wood. I was turning a little hollow form vase in apple the other day. Apple cuts like a dream, except for this piece. The form had been roughed between centers and was on the bowl lathe with a glue block so I started to make gentle truing cuts before the hollowing. Gentle strokes with a sharp Oland tool. Lovely little shavings leaving a beautiful surface ready for about 180 paper. No catches or such but suddenly a chunk went off my face shield. By the time I had the piece cut down there was some real tear out near the bottom. After reshaping and then reconsidering the overall form I gently and somewhat gingerly proceeded to turn for shape as the next chunk went off my chest and I began to seriously think of how nice apple kindling smells. Long story short, I got a piece somewhat smaller than I thought I would at first. My mother always said there would be days like that.

==================== Darrell, That sounds like a 5 inch dish I did that started out from an 8 X 8 inch block of spalted maple. Like you said, the wood makes a big diffence !
