(Newbie) 10" Peppermill Boring

I have made one 10" peppermill that came out great. However, to drill a 1 1/16th hole, I put an auger bit in the tail stock and moved in the tail, cranked in the bit, cranked the bit out, moved the tail in, cranked the bit in and out, moved the tail in, and repeated... The cranking was VERY hard and I think that I mashed some of the tail stock screw gears.

This is the only unpleasent part of the process. And, I don't want to damage the tail stock or the headstock by too much presure.

I figure that I must be doing something wrong. Can anyone share their experience? Or, just refer me to past posting (I did search on boring Peppermills, but not much came up).

Thank you very much!

Auger bits don't do well on end grain. Have you tried a Forstner bit?

I use a regular 1" twist drill with a MT2 taper right in the tailstock. Doesn't make as clean a hole as an auger or Forstner bit, but who cares? Its inside. I then use a skew as a fine scraper to open the end up a bit to accept the grinding mechanism. Of course, one has to be VERY gentle because of the overhang. Eventually, I'll just get a 1 1/16" bit.

Try the HSS Forstner bits from Lee Valley. Great bits.
