My on/off switch is very tempermental, so, I got it running and used an externat on/off. It still will just stop once every so often. What can I do. Do I need a whole new switching box?

Don't know which motor you have, but the box-mounted switch on my 1 HP nameless was a flimsy POS which was sensitive from the time I acquired the lathe barely used. It would not make good contact without jiggle, so I thought it might be sawdusted or have a spring slipped. When I opened, even the coppers were toasted. Junk. Number of different motors were used, including the infamous Leeson variable, so yours may not be the same.

That said, can you conceive of a worse place to put that switch than on the motor? Mine's in a box that I can hang on a magnet anywhere now. Mostly at the tail end, where I don't have to lean a bowl and off the end when spindles are in progress. Since I got a motor-rated switch with enough metal to last, it should be fine into the future. Suggest you do something similar.
