OT: Computer Help needed.......

Ruth, In regards to the screen jumping, is it happening when you are scrolling with the mouse? If so it might be just because you moved the mouse off of the scroll bar, that is you moved the mouse sideways while moving down. Just move the mouse back onto the scroll bar and the message jumps back to where you were. You got plenty of good advice on the other problems. Take care Martin

Ruth,

Check on how frequently your newsgroups are being updated. On the top of your screen click on Tools, then click on Options. There is an option of how frequently the newsgroup updates. You will want to set it to something like

subscribed).

What does that mean? I don't even have "tools" at the top of my screen. Do you get the newsgroup "mail" without going to look at it?

Another novice!

In OUTLOOK EXPRESS there's a list of titles at the top named

File, Edit, View, Tools ...

Look in Tools, then Options, then select the GENERAL tab and look in there for

Send/Receive Messages: [ ] Check for new messages every xx seconds (if unchecked, then it only loads new messages at startup)

Also, you can select the READ tab for

News: Get [ 1000 ] Headers at at time

Thanks. I didn't know you could have them sent to you. I click on a site link to view them. Also, I don't use Outlook Express for mail. As many of the postings are not of great interest to me, I suppose I'm better off not overloading my email file.

While I'm at it, how about you boys and girls changing the subject line once the content has substantially changed? Stephen

You subscribe to newsgroups, and they are separate from email. You need a mail reader to handle them properly. It downloads the headers and you select the message you want to read and then it downloads the message. I use Mozilla, but there are many good newsreaders out there.

Hmmm....Although I"ve only been reading this newsgroup for a year or two, I've been using 8 other newsgroups for 5 or 6 years and, in all cases, I click on something to open them up and see the postings, if any. I've never heard of what you're talking about and didn't know there was any other way to do it. Can you tell me a little more, like, where to these messages "appear" if they're not emails? Stephen

Mike's answers/recommendations are 100% on track. I use Agent (=/- 30 bucks when I bought) but free agent is, well, FREE. It was written for news! Also Adware and Spybot S&D are the best, and also FREE. mccs

No offense intended but "jump" is a kind of vague term--could you describe the behavior in more detail? In any case new posts coming in should not affect the behavior of Outlook Express at all.

This would indicate that something is not working properly.

That would be a desperation measure.

Going to a different newsreader program might help the particular problem you're having or might not, depending on the cause. Better to find out what is causing the behavior you are observing and fix it.
