Pierced turning finish

I've been experimenting with some small piercings and was wondering how finishes are handled on such things. I don't want to plug up the piercings but yet, I assume, some finish needs to be in there. I've got one particular natural edged bowl that I've completed the piercing part of it today and I'd planned on just spray lacquering it. Oils, urethanes, etc. would have the same problems I would imagine too. Do you just put the finish on and poke the plugs out? Do you try to get some finish in those piercings using a toothpick (or in some of my cases a sewing needle) ?

After air/finish, follow with air. Takes less time.

An old scrollsaw trick is to apply oil, then blow out holes with an airgun. Should work here too if you're williing to use oil finish.

Hmm Possibly could do an oil instead. Good trick. I'll keep that in mind if I do go with the oil.

Thanks!
