The idea of using a chain saw to cut the blank into an octagonal form help me a little. My lathe (low end) works much better and vibrates less when the blank is cut with a band saw. I only have an electric chain saw. I do want to upgrade to a professional chain saw. But I am not sure that a better chain saw will improve the octagonal cutting of the blanks. I can see one using a high end lathe to rough out a chain saw cut blank at about 100 - 200 RPM. This is not the case with me. My lathe only goes to

600 RPM. Truing and roughing out a green 10-14" )OD oak or maple octagonal blank becomes a real challenge. Unless I can learn better skill in using the chain saw to cut blanks and get a much better lathe?

One method that I have read about but not tried is to use a router.

You build or use something that supports the wood along the axis that you want to rough along. Using two boards on edge on either side of the piece and a large enough base plate on the router you start removing material by running it back and forth on the wood supports. You turn the piece periodically once the current part is "good enough". If you have a look in some router books you can probably find the jig I'm talking about. Some of them even use a motore to spin the piece ( slowly) while you move the router back and forth to true it up.

Since it's rough work, the piece could be mounted on a faceplate (1" 8) bolted through a well-braced piece of 1 1/2 (doubled) plywood, rotated by hand against a variable-depth router mount.

May have to do that versus my approximate with chainsaw and waste away with a scrub plane method, as my lathe has a ~500 minimum. Fortunately, it's belt driven, and a good heavy cut throttles it right on down.

Owen, thanks for the welcome back. Yes, I followed the thread about Al and had real mixed feelings. He did make me laugh, I did not want to know his identiy and he was offensive at times so I don't miss that. Trolls may come and trolls may go but there'll never be another Al!
