The Watco I use recommends a 48-72 hour waiting period after the oil application before any top coats are put on. I have used penetrating finishes like Watco with good results to bring out the figure in several different species. I usually wait two days after a double or triple application of Watco before I topcoat with Behlen's woodturner's finish (friction applied lacquer), which is then covered with either carnauba wax (friction appleid from a solid bar) or "Minwax Finishing Wax" paste; these are then buffed-out to a high gloss shine.
