You might try using one side of a brass coupling fitting ... used for copper tubing coupling... (found in the copper pipe section of any hardware store) turn a collar on the end of the handle.... drill a whole in the end of the collar sized to fit your gouge with a tight fit... , place the brass fitting over the gouge and slide it onto the collar... Note end of coler should be sized just small enough to get the threads of the fitting to bight into the wood... as you tighten the fitting... the fitting will compress the wood onto the gouge... (its designed to squeeze brass tubing so it wont leak) works great and... you can take it apart if you ever want to... the brass fitting looks good to! I have used this on bole gouges I have made...
