(Any experineces with turning Holm Oak or Quercus Ilex?)
Russell, I try to turn this timber frequently, not only is it a delightful grain but if cut as in a scallop or half sphere (This is how I see it anyway!) it takes on a 3 dimensional effect.
If the timber is very dry, it is as hard as iron and can only be chipped away and needs frequent sharpening of gouges etc. It takes a gorgeous polish and using only beeswax the depth of shine can be quite staggering.
In my experience it is the very devil to split both green and dry and I suggest you use either a very sharp chainsaw or employ someone who is willing to take the risks!
