Arch, I don't see that proposition as being "either / or". First I admire the beauty. Then, when I've sated myself on it, I look to see if the piece might be within my ability to ape. If it appears to be so, then I start dissecting the black box of its creation. If it appears to be beyond my current skills, I still try to learn as much about its construction as I can. I am looking to apply those skills and materials to my own work so that someday someone will look at MY work and say "WOW! How'd you do that?"
