Re: Surplus Center Gast Vacuum Pumps - For Vacuum Chucking Setup - Anyone?

Hi Joe, I've been using a Gast vacuum pump from Surplus Center for a couple years. It works excellent and was pretty easy to set up. There are pictures of my setup on my website under the lathe and tools section. Oneway has an excellent picture on thier site that shows how everything is connected. Vacuum is one of those things like variable speed that you wonder how you got by without. :-)

Has anyone had any experience with the Gas Vacuum Pumps from Surplus >Center?

Hi Joe,

I bought one of the Gast vacuum pumps from them. It has worked perfectly for several years. I think I paid around $70.00 US for it.

I did have to wire the capacitor to the motor, but it was included in the price.

It was pretty simple to hook it up. Although I did buy the rotary adaptor from Oneway. The rest is done with off the shelf plumbing fixtures.

Here is my set up...

The only addition to the Oneway diagram I would make is to add an in-line filter to get rid of any dust/chips before it gets to the pump. A cartridge type water filter works. Any hardware store or RV lot will have them.

I am in the process of setting up a vacuum chucking system using a pump I purchased from Bill Noble and a E-Z Vacuum Adapter from Craft Supply. The pump is a used Gast that Bill checked prior to selling. I don't have a gauge yet so I can't tell for sure what it is pulling but I think Bill said it was tested to 27 inches.

You might want to contact Bill ( I don't have his web site handy).
