Re: Travelling and Turning (Gloat & Question)

Ken, This is NOT called "retiring"! : ) You just can't stop turning, can you!?!

Although I know nothing about camping with a turner next door, I can appreciate the people on vacation desiring peace and quiet. If they are not retired, they only have a week or two in the quiet world of camping. Perhaps you should heed the warnings of the actual group you'd be in the midst of instead of a group of turners who think the sound of the lathe is the same as a robin's.

Good luck! Ruth

Why should you kow-tow to a few old soreheads. What is their opinion on noise, (hollering and such all day long) which many of them do and never think a thing about it. I would have no trouble with you camped next to me but I do take exception to those that think the campground is their personal property and they can do as they please with disturbing everyone with there screaming and hollering and such. Have fun with your turning, enjoy yourself and you don't make near as much noise as those old soreheads do.

Ken, I'm sure when you went to the RV group most of the hate mail would have come from a group of folks that have their RVs and would just as soon nobody else be allowed to own one. You get the same attitude from just about any group.

Anyway, what kind of noise are you talking about when compared to the boom boxes the kids have, the teenage loud exhausts (take your long and strong bowl gouge) or some of the parties the adults have. I doubt if you are planning on starting in at 6:00 in the morning and keeping it up late into the night. Now as far as wrecking their vacation, my gosh if sitting in a lawn chair all day bitching about the noise that Canadian is making is their idea of a good time then say sorry and close up shop for a day until either they or you move to a new camp site. If all else fails you can set up for awhile in my back yard but you need to hurry the creek will be dry in another week.

You might run into a problem setting up a for sale booth if that is part of the plan. In any event, take your lathe and enjoy yourself.

Reply-to WON"T work, you'll need to type in the real address. You should have bean getting the e-mail that I've sent you though. You did get the right phone number.

That would be "Missouri" or "Missoura" or maybe "That drive been St Louis (we don't claim St Louis as a part of Missouri, by the way) and Kansas City (Kansas can have it!)", or even "Zura"

What part of Missouri are you going to be staying? If you're anywhere the South Central or South Western part, I invite you to come to a brand new AAW Club (which I've not officially announced here yet) meeting in Springfield. We meet the 3rd Thursday of each month from 7pm - 9pm. Email me if you want the details.

As to your original question in this thread about camping with a lathe .... I wouldn't be too happy about it. But then, I don't "camp" in those kinds of places. There's a lot of those RV Parks and so-called campgrounds around the area and they're pretty popular for many months of the year. If I'm going to camp, then I'm actually going to CAMP and get away from everything and everybody else.

I have been saving a list of those who have asked for demos. I am a bit unsure how I feel about that right now, I have been doing nothing but turning for the last 11 years, I demo everyday in the summer to 800-1200 tourist per day and I have grown a little less excited with it all..... It is still the greatist way to make a living and I will do it until I die and then some, but I am going to slow to a dead crawl and try to enjoy the chalanges and joys the wood lathe can bring....

I will be deciding before I go off, and e-mail all the groups who have showed interest if I decide to try and earn and learn as I go......

Cheers and good turning.....Ken

I will be thinkning on the group demos thing adn get back to you all here before I leave... I have learnt a great deal from those woodtruners who have traveled to our region and give (sell) their experiances and techniques with us....

One fellow I credit a great deal is Melvin Fermager who I was lucky enough (and finacially well off enough) to spend a three day weekend with. He swept thouugh here and left a dozen broke and highly motivated young woodturners staring at the pieces he turned with awn and wonder.... For me personnally, he sparked something in me, that sent me on an eleven year mision to turn turn turn......... I am not sure I could live up to that.... I think I would feel a bit like the snake oil salesmen,,,,,,,,,, I just make bowls and the like for fun and mostly for profit...... I will mull if over for a couple of months before, I decide for sure..... Cheers...... and good turning,,,,, Ken.....

Good, that is the kind of think I was hoping to hear. I still have to earn a fair chunk of gas money, so I am hoping the website and few interested campers will do the trick. I have alway just jumped in and hoped that there were not too many gators... But, I believe in the idea of the Garth Brooks clasic : Standing outside the fire... Not a danger freak, but a to heck with it, lets do it type guy.... Thanks for your coments...... Cheers..... Ken.

Nice, thought. I have often thought of making a pole lathe or a treadle lathe. I have an old singers sowing machine sitting here for that expressed reason,,,,,, I must take another look at that....... Cheers and thanks....... Ken

Ken: For the first three years of retirement I bought a big GMC and 30 ft trailer, we did the Alaska, Florida, Maritimes(twice) and Newfoundland trips as well as lots of short weekends. I can't ever recall seeking anyone turning or doing any kind of noise making hobby for that matter. Lots of guys selling Dri-wash and the odd person flogging stone collections but never a lathe. I would think a big problem (for RVers) might be the mess unless you keep the campfire going.. good luck.

Great. I will be looking for you.... I have decided to go with a small table top lathe and I will just make trinkets Bottle stoppers, pens and the like. I doubt anyone will complain about that.... Cheers.... Ken....

I envy you. I've got four years before I can retire. I suggest you stay out of camp grounds. Just cruise around to the homes of the folks on the list, park in their yards and use their lathes.

As you travel south down the east coast for your Florida winter, stop off in Fairfax VA. You can park your trailer in the driveway and tour the greater Washington DC area. If I know your're comming, I'll even try to clean up the shop so you can get to the tools. :)
